What Each Metric Actually Measures (And When to Trust It)
Understanding what each metric represents, and where each can be gamed, is what separates buyers who evaluate domains properly.
Domain Authority (DA) — Moz
Measures backlink profile strength on a 1‑100 scale. DA can be inflated by building links from high‑DA sites. Threshold for PBN: DA 30 minimum.
Domain Rating (DR) — Ahrefs
Similar to DA but uses Ahrefs' index. Watch for rapid DR increase without corresponding traffic growth. Threshold: DR 25 minimum for standard placements.
Trust Flow (TF) & Citation Flow (CF) — Majestic
TF measures trusted source links; CF measures raw volume. The TF/CF ratio is the hardest metric to fake. Threshold: TF ≥12, ratio ≥0.70.
Spam Score — Moz
Percentage reflecting spam characteristics. Scores above 8‑10% warrant investigation. Not definitive alone; cross‑reference with TF/CF.
Estimated Organic Traffic
Approximation of monthly visitors from search. High traffic suggests active crawl and natural link context. Crucial for niche edits; less so for PBN domains.
Referring Domains Count
Breadth of backlink profile. But check DR distribution: 500 RDs with 90% DR 0‑10 is weak. Minimum 20 unique RDs for PBN.
Indexed Pages Count
Number of pages currently in Google's index. Zero = deindexed = no equity passing. Confirm via site: search.
How to Use These Metrics Together: The PBN Domain Evaluation Framework
- 1. Check DA & DR for directional strength. Meet minimum thresholds.
- 2. Check TF/CF ratio — reject below 0.70.
- 3. Check spam score — above 10% investigate; above 15% + low TF/CF = reject.
- 4. Check indexed pages — zero = deindexed, discard.
- 5. Check organic traffic — not primary for PBN, but compounding red flag with other issues.
- 6. Cross‑reference RD count against DR — DR 40 with 12 RDs is fragile.

Frequently Asked Questions
The TF/CF ratio from Majestic. It's the hardest to manipulate. A domain with DA 45 and TF/CF 0.40 is worse than one with DA 30 and ratio 1.10.
Each tool crawls independently. Discrepancies are normal. Use numbers comparatively rather than as absolute values.
This is the most common red flag. High DA/DR with low TF indicates manufactured links. Usually, no. The link will pass weaker trust signals than the numbers suggest.
Above 0.70 acceptable. Above 0.85 good. Above 1.0 indicates clean editorial history. Below 0.50 signals bulk low‑quality links.
Less than for niche edits. Expired domains often have minimal traffic. Historical backlink quality matters more. Confirm via Wayback Machine.
